Professional interests and activities:

Atomic physics experiments, often using (fast or slow) ion beams
• Atomic structure (spectra, relativistic effects, QED contributions, hyperfine structure) and dynamics (lifetimes, branching ratios, special decay modes)
• Spectroscopy (EUV, soft-x-ray) with links to astrophysics and plasma diagnostics
• Intercombination and forbidden transitions in multiply charged ions

Much of the above has been done at the Bochum Dynamitron-Tandem Laboratorium (DTL, now part of RUBION ) with its superb facilities.
However, for some special work I have traveled to do

• Beam-foil spectroscopy of highly charged, very heavy ions at GSI Darmstadt and at Argonne National Laboratory (USA) (and for work with ions of lower charge states to various other places, such as Oxford UK, Brookhaven NY, Stockholm SE, Tucson AZ, Toledo OH, Daresbury UK, Liège BE),
• Heavy-ion storage ring experiments (Precision atomic lifetime measurements using TSR Heidelberg (now closed down), at MPIK),
• Electron beam ion trap (EBIT) atomic lifetime and spectroscopy experiments (first) at NIST Gaithersburg and (later and mostly, by far) at the
  University of California Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory . The EBIT group in LLNL's High Temperature and Astrophysics Division (now the Physics Division) has become a second science home base for me. In 2011 and 2012, the Heidelberg and Livermore EBIT groups joined forces for experiments at the LCLS X-ray light source at SLAC (Menlo Park, CA, USA), photoexciting ions trapped in the traveling FLASH EBIT from MPIK Heidelberg.

  Since the Bochum physics faculty has phased out work in atomic physics at the Bochum accelerators, I have become a freelance physicist, continuing to pursue my physics research especially with experiments at Heidelberg, Livermore, and Liège. Up to 2014, my research has been fairly regularly supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG.

• Evaluation of archival experimental data has continued into partial retirement, but the piles of unevaluated data (and the memory of their former purpose) are dwindling. My spectroscopy teaching has ended in 2019.

My association and address are with AIRUB, the Astronomy Institute at Ruhr-Universtät Bochum, by courtesy of Prof. Dr. R.-J. Dettmar. The institute is concerned with cosmology and galaxy evolution, a horizon much wider than my experience.
