Didactic goals / Lernziele
The students are guided to recognize how the physical study of multiply charged ions
is intertwined with the technical processes of making such ions. Different
production mechanisms go along with different methods of detection and
investigation. Ion sources depend on a rather small set of basic phenomena;
the students are to realize these in the various working principles
of ion sources and to estimate their effects.
The students will learn about the concepts and operating principles of
gadgets for immediate ion detection and of detectors for various ranges of the
electromagnetic spectrum that is emitted by ions. For a given measurement problem,
the students are to learn how to judge the capabilities of detectors.
nachzuvollziehen, welche allgemeinen technisch-wissenschaftlichen
Fortschritte jeweils zu spektroskopischen und ionenphysikalischen
Entwicklungen beigetragen haben. Sie sollen die physikalischen
Eigenheiten bestimmter Techniken (wie Bogenentladung, Funkenentladung,
Hohlkathodenentladung (HKL / HCD), Tokamak, Laser-erzeugtes Plasma,
schnelle Ionenstrahlen, Elektron-Zyklotron-Resonanz-Ionenquelle
Particular emphasis is being placed on the historic development and evolution
of ion sources to also serve as light sources for spectroscopy, up to
present (national and international) research centers. The students are
expected to become able to recognize what general technical and scientific
progress has been important for progress in spectroscopic and ion physical
developments. They are to recognize, describe and judge the peculiar properties
of certain techniques and apparatuses such as arc discharge, spark discharge,
hollow cathode discharge, tokamak, laser-produced plasma, fast ion beams,
electron cyclotron resonance ion source, or electron beam ion source.
In order to help overcome the barrier of reading foreign language papers and their
complex language style and notation, the students may be given copies of recent
journal publications. It is expected that the students will identify, from the
combination of lecture and reading material, the specific aims of modern
experiments in spectroscopy and heavy-ion physics, and try to recognize the
decisive elements of the measurement and of the expeimental plan.
It would be good to develop a competency of estimating key parameters of such experiments
and to search for the limits of measurement.
Die Fakultät hat für diese Veranstaltung 2 Credit Points angesetzt / The faculty offers 2 credit points for this course.
Prüfungsmodalitäten zum Erwerb eines benoteten Scheins:
Examination steps for a graded credit:
a) 2 schriftliche Kurztests während der Vorlesung / 2 brief written tests during the lecture
b) Lehrgespräche während der Vorlesung / scientific discussion in the course
c) etwa halbstündiger schriftlicher Test am Ende des Semesters / about half-hour written test at the end of term
The results of all test components will be weighted and combined to a single grade.
Heckmann/Träbert: Einführung in die "Spektroskopie der Atomhülle",
Wiesbaden: Vieweg 1980 bzw. "Introduction to the Spectroscopy of Atoms",
finden (http://sed.nist.gov/Pubs/AtSpec/total.html).
The lecture presents didactically simplified concepts that are meant to
enease the intellectual access to the content of established text books,
of which a variety is available in the faculty library
(among others, Heckmann/Träbert: "Einführung in die Spektroskopie der Atomhülle",
Wiesbaden: Vieweg 1980 and "Introduction to the Spectroscopy of Atoms",
Amsterdam: North-Holland 1989), and to journal papers with their high density
of detailed information. The technical basics of spectroscopic notation are available,
for example, in an article "Atomic Spectroscopy" by W. C. Martin and W. L. Wiese im the
WWW (http://sed.nist.gov/Pubs/AtSpec/total.html). The lecture is not meant to
make personal reading superfluous (learning by listening only is ineffective);
the lecture aims to illuminate the context of basic text books, which should
then help the students with reading those and with finding orientation beyond.
